5 Goals for 2013

Here’s something you should know about me: I like lists.

Making a list is therapeutic for me. Somehow the act of writing down things that I either have to, or want to, accomplish cements them in my brain. I used to make huge long lists of every possible little thing that I wanted to do, and following through with that huge to-do list was almost never successful. I have notebooks full of lists, stacks of papers on my desk full of lists, post-it notes stuck to all kinds of surfaces with lists on them.

This year, apart from making a list of goals for myself, the “taming of the list” itself is a goal.  So, I’m narrowing my ambitions down to 5 items. 5 goals that I want to work on throughout the year. I’m sure there will inevitably be lists of weekly to-do’s and daily to-do’s, but if I can hold myself to these 5 goals this year, I’ll hopefully feel pretty good once 2014 rolls around.


I’ve had this goal for years now. I’ve run the gamut of possibilities for what type of business it should be, what I should make, what I can be successful at, what other would like to buy…. but, I have to yet to DO anything about it. This year I want to get something started. Then we’ll see where it goes from there.


My boyfriend has told me multiple times that I’m “not very good at being a girl”. And, while this may sound weird, it’s very true. I spend almost no time on myself. Little things like shaving my legs, painting my toenails, putting on makeup properly – I very rarely do these things. So this year, I want to invest more time in myself. I’m also including exercising in this goal as well. I’ve been pretty good the last couple of months at working out regularly, but I want to continue this.

And, by investing, I also mean in a monetary sense as well – as in buying quality clothes, quality makeup, and paying someone to cut my hair more than once a year. I’ve gone too long buying cheap clothes that lose their shape after one wash. My makeup is junk from Walgreens. This year, if I buy something new, it’s going to be good quality, fit me well, and I’m going to take care of it so it lasts.


This falls into the “exercise” category, but I want to run a half marathon. I have a couple of options that I’m looking at, so stay tuned.


Thanks to the awesome kindle I got for Christmas (thanks A!) this goal is looking easier and easier to accomplish. I’ve already read 2 whole books since getting it, and am well on my way to finishing Atonement. I used to never enjoy reading as a kid. My eyes would get tired and I hated having to read books for classes. My sisters were both regular book worms and I envied their abilities to fly through books. We have shelves and shelves of books at my parent’s house that everyone but me has read – time to change that.


I suck at keeping in touch. I’ve never been one for phone talks – I get bored too easily. So this year I’m determined to find some other ways to keep in touch with people. I’d like to try keeping my facebook profile updated (we’ll see how well that goes). I’d also like to start sending some little goodies in the mail. I love to design little greeting cards, so I’m planning on putting those to good use this year. That reminds me, I’ve got to stock up on stamps!
